The process

Traditional hand-weaving. Properly done.

Using the same strand-by-strand techniques that have been used for centuries, each cane seat is re-woven by hand — no shortcuts, no rushed repairs, no pre-woven panels pressed in. Every hole is threaded individually, the weave checked and tensioned throughout to ensure an even, durable result.

Heirloom dining chairs, Victorian nursing chairs, vintage market finds — if the frame is sound, the seat can be restored. A proper repair lasts decades. Free quotes via email with no obligation.

Common questions about cane restoration

  • Email a photo of the top and underside of your chair to Charliebthomas@icloud.com. Most quotes are returned within 48 hours, with no obligation to proceed. Include the approximate dimensions of the seat if you know them.

  • Standard six-way hand cane, close cane, and most traditional woven patterns. If you're unsure, send a photo and I'll confirm. Pre-woven sheet cane (pressed-in) and rush seating are not currently offered.

  • Current turnaround is approximately 4 weeks from receipt of the chair. This reflects the time the work actually takes — each hole is threaded individually. You'll receive updates throughout the process.

  • No — chairs are regularly sent by courier from across the UK. I'll advise on packaging and safe postage when you enquire. For large or delicate pieces I can suggest reliable couriers.
